Reverse Fern Stitch – October Square

Reverse Fern Stitch
Reverse Fern Stitch

The fabulous shapes in this pattern reminded me of leaves and this months’ colour sang of fall colours – so here we are Autumn leaves in our square.  The texture and movement is created by knits and purls, increases and decreases.

Materials: 22grs, Tracks, Koi; 3.25mm, US# 3 needles; markers and the regular notions.

Gauge: 28 sts in 4 inches in stockinet

Dimensions: 8 inches by 8 inches

Abbreviations:  K1tbl – knit 1 st through the back loop.  K2tog – knit 2 stitch together.  SSK – slip the next 2 sts knitwise (one at a time), then insert the left needle across the front of your 2 slipped sts and knit them together.  SI – special increase – PYOP – P1 into the next st, do not remove the st, YO, P1 into the same st (double increase – 3 sts from 1 st).  YO – yarn over; LIR – lifted increase right – new stitch is to the right of the original st – With the right hand needle tip lift the back loop of the stitch below the stitch on the left hand needle, knit into the back loop and then knit the st on the needle;  LIL – lifted increase left – new stitch is to the left of the original st – with the left hand needle tip lift the side loop of the stitch below the st just removed from the left hand needle, knit into the loop on the left hand needle.
