Owl Magic, Sea Birds and Sea-Stars

It was/is a grey day.  A Wet-Coast Winter’s day, grey, a little dreary, with dim lighting and just a little nippy!

But the walk at Neck Point this morning was more that a little magical.

It all started with the Owl – a Great Barred Owl – dozing on a branch right beside the trail.  At first I thought it was just an extension of the branch, another limb – short and broken off perhaps and then I realized just what I was looking at – the back of an Owl.

I got very close!

I spent about 10 minutes staring at, talking to, and taking pictures of this beautiful creature.  Owls are truly wise creatures.  This owl was sleeping slowly opening and closing it’s eye’s, very dark eyes – with fluffy eyelids – very pretty!  No panic,  just watched me as I watched it.

The owl set the theme for the walk.  I saw turkey tail roses, a Great Grey Heron perched high up in a tree across Sunset Bay and a new sea-bird (new to me).

A whole flock of Surfbirds (Or they could be Black Turnstones) rose in flight as I watched.  They shifted, as a whole, from one rocky perch to another!  An Amazing Aerial Performance.

Drifting……

Grey days can create some amazing images.  Trees are stark against the skies and grey rocks drift across grey seas and into grey skies.  I like these kind of images.  They are home and a wonderful back drop to the colours that do shine out from the small vignettes created by the world around us.

Like the ducks we saw as we walked back to the car, a pair of Mallards drifting across the pond – perfect.

Or a backdrop to the many coloured yarns that I create with every day.  Rainbows and all the shades of nature in my hands.

Yesterday morning I finished the Sea-Star Hat – version 1 anyway!  I think it needs a little work – so version 2 should be along shortly!

Happy Day – I hope that you find some magic.

Happy New Year’s One and All!

My New Year’s Resolution is to find out more about my family histories.  My Cousin Cathy shared a bunch of old family pictures this year – time to do something with them!

This year has been swept away - time for the next!

Not quite sure what happened to December – it was here and then it wasn’t!

I have been knitting and writing patterns – trying to recover from the Stevie Nicks project – it seems that playing catch-up gets interrupted by living and working.

I am still working on Rhiannon’s Cloak.  I think that it will be ready in March sometime.  I do have real work to do.  Other patterns and commissions that keep interfering with my progress!

On the up side I have published or created quite a few patterns over the last month.  Some for me and the Buffalo Wool Co.

Dad's Classic Toque - my Father's Christmas Present - that is him modelling. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dads-classic-toque
