Red-Breasted Sapsucker

This morning’s walk at Morden Colliery was a pretty normal walk.  Damp, foggy, lots of green and grey mosses and lichens and everything dripping with moisture.

Hiding and dancing around the tree trunk!
Hiding and dancing around the tree trunk!

But…. As we were walking towards the car…. I saw a flash of red out of the corner of my eye!  It was a Red-Breasted Sapsucker with the most brilliant red head!

I could have watched him all morning.
I could have watched him all morning.

He posed for me.

He danced around the tree.
He danced around the tree.

IMG_2831He danced around the tree and came back 5 times – each time I inched closer.  And he would dance away again.

I took many photographs as I watched him!  He would watch me as he dipped his head into one of the little holes he had drilled into the tree trunk; he would move from hole to hole, always checking on where I was!  What a wonderful way to end the walk!

I hope that you enjoy his show!
