I know that it should be “Bread and Circuses”, but at this time of year – it is going to be “Shortbread” all around!

I have just made my first batch of shortbread and this is a new one for me.  I always make my Grandmother’s traditional shortbread and a Walnut Shortbread Cookie that are expected at this time of year by my family.  But I saw a new recipe and decided to try it out!

This one is in the Thrifty’s holiday magazine – Rum and Currant Shortbread.  I have just finished my first batch and it has possibilities!  You start out by soaking the currants in the rum overnight and you add that to the shortbread along with some orange peel (but I changed that to candied lemon and orange peel.  I think that after sitting in a tin for a week or so – these could be very good!  They pretty good right off of the rack – that is the biggest problem around here – the cookies seldom last long enough to “mature”!

Yesterday evening we went to see Cirque de la Symphonie at the Port Theatre.  What a wonderful evening!  The music was fabulous – we are so lucky to have such a talented symphony in our city – and the “Cirque” was incredible.

The Cirque portion consisted of 6 artists, each incredibly skilled.  They presented the circus from what I think was a very European viewpoint.  There was a clown/juggler who represented the humourous aspect of the circus, with a jester like costume and paint.  The women worked the quick change tricks and they pulled the conductor into the play!  One woman did a aerobic/trapeze rope act and then came back and performed a duo act with a male trapeze artist!   The contortionist made my bones ache just to watch him – it was a truly entertaining evening.

This morning we walked around Neck Point.  Cold and Clear – the air was crisp and scented with pine.  I hope that you enjoy the walk as much as we did!
